How much more could you achieve in your career, if you could just believe in yourself?
What we believe is the foundation for what happens in our lives.
When you believe you have the ability to achieve something, chances are it’s going to happen for you.
Henry Ford was famously quoted as saying “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right”
Self belief is the only thing you actually need, to have everything you could possibly want in life.
Bold statement? Sure. But let’s break it down.
The fact is that what we believe on a deep, subconscious level forms our feelings about situations that we’re in. Those feelings fuel our thought processes & what we’re thinking in any given moment determines the actions we take. Taking (or not taking) action is the final straw when it comes to creating an outcome.
So if you fundamentally believe that you’re not going to get promoted this year, or you don’t really do enough to deserve a pay rise, or that you’re not as intelligent as everyone else around the table, what kind of actions do you think you’ll take?
I don’t believe I’ll get a promotion this year → you won’t ask for one (so you definitely won’t get it)
I’m not as intelligent as everyone else → you won’t speak up or share your ideas (so you won’t be noticed or recognised for your contribution)
Flip the script on this & you’ll realise you have the power to create so much opportunity for yourself to succeed in everything you do.
By developing unshakeable confidence in yourself & your abilities, you not only hone in on the vision of what you really want to achieve (what will actually make you happy) but take steps to make it happen (because you know you deserve it).
Have you ever seen somebody, perhaps on the TV, maybe a competitor in a game, who seems so convinced that they’re going to win (even if they’re not the favourite), right from the start - and then they do?
That total conviction in their success gives them the focus to make quick, smart decisions - they’re not using any brain power deliberating what the odds are of them winning, they’re using 100% of their concentration to figure out how they’re going to do it.
Self-belief gives you the confidence to ask for what you want, to put yourself out there and try to succeed (even if it takes a few attempts).
If you believe in yourself, everything else you could possibly need to see the results you want in your career & in your life can be earned or learned, but you won’t do what needs to be done to earn or learn those additional resources if you don’t believe you deserve them, or deserve the success enough to look for them in the first place.
Having that confidence in yourself is what gives you the guts to ask for an opportunity you’ve spotted, to try without fear that you’ll fail, and to enjoy the path that you’re on by releasing the pressure you’re feeling right now that it’s all or nothing, win or lose, game over.
Do you ever catch yourself saying “what if?” when it comes to making a decision about your career progression?
What if I apply for a promotion/job and don’t get it?
What if I ask for a pay rise & get told ‘no’?
What if I make a suggestion & get shut down?
What if it all went your way, though?
Confidence & self belief give you the courage to be brave, be daring, to know that it’s OK to be vulnerable & it’s OK to get it wrong, but that it’s worth it.
If you’re on a promotion path that doesn’t seem to be moving, or following a ‘5 year plan’ that keeps getting extended, you might be missing this crucial element.
It’s not about what you want to achieve, when you want to achieve it by - or to a degree, even how you go about it - whether it happens or not in the end is down to whether or not you believe that it can.
There are a lot of resources out there about self-belief, a lot of inspirational memes, a lot of self-help books - and if those are working for you & transforming the way you show up at work, great!
But the chances are, you’re reading, saving & downloading things that make you feel positive or fired up in the moment...but implementing them & actually changing how you feel in the long term seems out of reach.
Being aware that confidence is something that might be holding you back from achieving everything you want at work (including your satisfaction & fulfilment, as well as your progression goals) is absolutely the first step.
