Equine Facilitated Learning
"Ever since I was a little girl, I loved being around horses.
I couldn’t tell you why, until in more recent years when I started using the daily yard chores as an excuse to visit before AND after work each day - I needed to unwind.
Seeing my horse in the morning on the way to work gave me a sense of calm & a clear head, before the chaos of the day ensued. And by the time I was driving home, I needed that big furry hug (& the good old smell of the farm) to give me an opportunity to reflect, & bring me back down to earth.
I love being able to share what horses have done for me, with so many others now - seeing the profound impact this work has, makes my job so worthwhile!"
What is EFL?
Equine-Facilitated Learning is a practice where participants (either individually or as a group) work with a horse through challenges or obstacles to complete a series of tasks.
The horse becomes a partner - part of the team - which means adjusting our approach to how we would usually collaborate, as regular verbal communication becomes an unavailable option!
This elicits profound reflections of self-awareness as well as developing communication & other interpersonal skills (such as leadership, empathy, relationship-building, critical thinking, decision-making, self-regulation & perspective) that are crucial to our ability to thrive in our careers (& lives overall).
Because EFL is a practical experience, it empowers us to model different behaviours, skills & approaches to achieve goals which can be taken away & applied to real-life scenarios.
At REFLEX, we provide Equine Facilitated Learning workshops to support companies with their employee engagement initiatives to improve their employee experience, including unusual team building activities, leadership skills development, building confidence and employee wellbeing & resilience at work.
Horses are intuitive, energetic, herd animals. They don’t care who you are or what you do - they live in the moment - and only respond to what’s happening in their personal space in the here & now.
Honest & gentle, their responses are instinctive & genuine, therefore acting as a mirror of our own emotion & energy when we interact with them (a pretty effective form of self-reflection)
Being herd-based, prey animals, horses have strong intuition & are very sensitive to their environment, picking up on the non-verbal communication & intentions of those around them.
To engage with them (& have them want to participate in activities with us), we must create the right environment for them to feel safe, & communicate our intentions clearly in new, powerful ways.
How do you use it?
